"I Can't Believe This Is My Life"

"I Can't Believe This Is My Life"

I said it out loud to Paul, somewhere in Alaska. I run my accounting business from an RV now — and AI is the reason I can.

We were hiking in Alaska this summer, a fishing rod in Paul's hand, a view in front of us that didn't look real, and I actually said it out loud: "I can't believe this is my life."

I've said it more than once this year — in Canada, in Alaska, in a dozen places I never thought I'd see until I retired, and certainly never on a workday. But here's the part I most want you to hear, because it's the whole point: this didn't used to be my life. Not even close.

The before

For years, my life looked like most accountants' lives. Long hours, tied to a desk. Drowning in repetitive work — the same categorizing, the same reconciliations, the same reports, over and over. And the freedom I wanted? It felt permanently out of reach, because the work simply would not let me leave. Travel was something I'd do "someday," when things slowed down. Things never slowed down.

At some point I realized "someday" is how you run out of good years. I didn't want to finally enjoy life at an age where enjoying it was harder. I wanted to enjoy it now — at an age that still lets me hike the trail and cast the line.

So on June 1st, 2025, we did it. We bought a travel trailer to pull behind our truck — and we left.

The road

Paul and I did three months on the road that first summer. This year we're doing six — June through November. Paul is the driver, the mechanic, the BBQ guy, the fisherman, and about ten other things. I'm the one who still runs a business the whole time we're out here.

Which is the question everyone asks: how? How do you run an accounting and training business from a moving vehicle in Alaska?

The honest answer is one word: AI.

How it actually works

I'm not going to pretend I do it all by hand from a campsite. I don't. AI runs an enormous share of my business now, and that's exactly what frees me up:

  • The bookkeeping — categorizing, reconciliations, the repetitive core — AI handles the heavy lifting.
  • The client reports and communications get drafted and prepped, so I'm reviewing and adding the human judgment instead of building everything from scratch.
  • The content and marketing — the blogs, the posts, the outreach that grows what we do — runs on AI too.
  • Even the agents and the training we deliver are AI at their core.

That's not a gimmick. That's the difference between being chained to a desk and standing on a trailhead. AI didn't just make my work faster — it made a completely different life possible.

The rhythm

Freedom without structure is just chaos, so we built a rhythm. I get up early and work on Texas time no matter where we are. I work honest 8-hour days. We try to take one weekday off every week. And I no longer work weekends at all — none. We only travel on certain days, and we cap how far we'll drive on a drive day, so the road never turns back into a grind.

Structure plus AI is the magic combination. The structure keeps the business healthy; the AI makes the structure possible. Nothing gets dropped. Clients are served. The lights stay on. And I'm still hiking by early afternoon.

And here's what's surprised me most: even when we're "home," we live in the travel trailer full-time now. It's a simpler life than the one I left — less stuff, less noise, fewer things tugging at me — and somehow a much fuller one. A simple life and a full adventure at the same time. Most of all, it's teaching me something the always-on version of me never knew how to do: relax.

What I actually want you to take from this

Three things, and I mean all three:

This is possible for you, too. I'm not special. I'm an accountant who learned to put AI to work. That's it.

It's not really about the AI — it's about the life it buys back. The hours, the freedom, the "I can't believe this is my life" moments. AI is just the lever. What it moves is your actual life.

Don't wait for "someday." Someday is a thief. If there's a version of your life you keep postponing until work calms down, please hear me: work will not calm down on its own. You change it. And the tool to change it has never been more within reach.

That's genuinely why we run our free week — to hand you the exact skill that made all of this possible for me. It's completely free: one hour a day, live at 3 PM CST, replays if you miss one, no card, nothing to cancel.

Upcoming weeks: Aug 31–Sep 4, Sep 7–11, Sep 14–18. Claim your seat: humansplusagents.ai/legacy-sbc-aia Prefer to start by picking your free AI agent? aiaccounting.legacysbc.com/build-a-bundle

I read and answer every message myself — even from the road. So if you have a question, just ask. And if you're on the fence, come see what's possible. I was standing exactly where you are, not that long ago.

Right now I'm somewhere I never imagined I'd be on a Tuesday. I'd love for you to get there too.
