It is good advice, and it has made a lot of firms successful. You No Longer Have to Pick One Niche. You Can Be the Expert in All of Them.

For years, the advice to every accountant and bookkeeper who wanted to grow was the same: niche down. Pick one industry, learn it cold, and become the person everyone in that world refers. It was good advice, because specialization is where the real money and the real trust live. A client does not want a generalist who has seen their industry once. They want the expert who already knows their rules.

But niching down always came with a quiet cost. When you chose one industry, you turned away every client outside it. And the reason you had to choose was simple: nobody can genuinely master the accounting quirks of ten different industries by hand. There are not enough hours. So you picked one, and you let the rest go.

That tradeoff is over. Here is why.

Every industry really is its own world

This is not marketing. It is the actual work, and anyone who has crossed from one industry to another knows it.

Nonprofits run on restricted versus unrestricted funds, grant compliance, functional expense allocation, and the Form 990 at the end of the year. Law firms keep two separate sets of books, and the trust account has to pass a three-way reconciliation to the penny or a career is on the line. Construction lives on job costing, work in progress, retainage, and percentage of completion. A small business owner just needs the books clean enough to make a decision on Monday. How a Chance to Learn From Steve Cunningham Doubled My Firm in 11 Months

 

I want to tell you a story about a decision that changed my business, my team, and honestly, my life. It is the story of how Legacy SBC became what it is today, and it starts with a person I was lucky enough to cross paths with years ago.

Where it began

I first met Steve Cunningham when he was building Readitfor.me. I was fortunate to work with him and his team back then, and even in those early days something stood out about the way he operated. The shift in how I saw it

At some point I made a quiet but important decision. I decided I was not just going to work with Steve. I was going to learn from him.

What happened next

Here is the bottom line, and it still amazes me to write it.
